Keep Our Heart

so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.  Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” (1Corinthians 1:29-31)

Yesterday I was meeting with other company that wants to cooperate with our company.  CEO of it company comes with some of the directors. As a first step, they give a presentation about the background of their company. I was accompanied by all of directors and my secretary.  Confidently the CEO began his presentation. He recounted in detail the background of the company also shows us their achievements.

During the presentation, there was a thing that slightly bothers my mind.  What is that? From the beginning of the presentation he always said “I” He not says “We” And the longer it he increasingly tried to show how good he is as a corporate leader. He tried to convince us that he is able to work together very well in this project. He Said: “With my experience and capabilities, I am very convinced that I can provide advantages in both sides. Advantages to your company and of course to mine”

Then one of our directors asks him a question: “What about the marketing strategy?” he chuckled and it seems he underestimated that question.  He replied with a haughty tone:” Please don’t think about it. I already have a great marketing strategy of this project! And I will show it if there was cooperate agreement!”

My dear friends, right now I am not going to discuss about the leadership. But I am going to discuss about vanity!  I think you and I agree that the CEO was not only having very high self-confidence but unwittingly he has shown his arrogance. It was reflected in his words. He always told “I”, “I” and so on. My daddy teaches me one valuable thing in leadership. “Don’t ever say “I “but always say “We” Don’t ever say ‘my company “But say “Our company “.  You cannot work alone.  Success of a company is not only because you are led it. But you have a great team who help you to achieve our goals. Treat them as a family. Change the Vanity with the humility.

What my father said was true. But, The Most important thing that should we remember is, all the capabilities that we have, it all comes from God. It is the grace from Him and I am surely believed that God will take it all from us if we cannot use it well. Bragging is not a deed pleasing to God. This act illustrates that we are stealing the glory of God for the sake of self pride. Arrogance is the result of our hearts that are not maintained properly.  Jesus said: For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”(Mark 7:21-23).

CEO’s story also illustrates that successfully become a leader will bring arrogance if we forget that all of it is a blessing and grace from God. If we did have to show our success, do not overwhelming to show it, and do not get stuck in the sin of pride. We must also continue to keep our hearts with all diligence, for out of the heart was the springs of life. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverb 4:23)

God is not pleased with those who have Vanity! “When people are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’  Then he will save the downcast.” (Job22:29)

So, what about us? Whether we still living in Vanity? We proud of what we do and we could not keep our hearts so that we fall into the sin of pride? We should remember and ponder one thing; The Holy Bible clearly said that God’s judgments will come for those people who living in vanity. “For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:” (Isaiah 2:12)

Let us keep our hearts in order not to fall into the sin of pride and always remember that it all comes from God. It is the grace from God. Amen!
