Do Good

DO GOOD- Karina's Thought

Once upon a time, in the cold morning, a young woman cries in the front of the old homeless man who had died at the corner of the sidewalk. “Why are you crying, mam?  Are you his family?” Someone asked. The women replied, “No, He is not my family. I don’t even really know who he is” “If so, why you look so sad?” The women replied again, “Yesterday morning, I saw him lying down here. Somehow, my heart was moved and has a plan to buy him a food and drink after I go back from the office. What makes me sad and deeply regret is, I put off my plan and just did it this morning. But it turns out this morning he was passing away. I deeply regret why I put off the chance to do something good while there is an opportunity to do so.”

My beloved friends, here we talk about do good. There are six things that should to bear in our heart and mind in doing good.

Why we should to do good? Every religion has always taught its followers to do good. But there is something different with us as Christian. What is the difference? First, let’s have a look to 3 John 1:11,

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

This verse affirmed that for the Christians do good is not just a moral instigation and not just something mandatory to be done, also not as a way to get salvation or so we can live in Our Father’s home in heave but rather as a Christian identity. Do good is a faith expression and a proof that we fulfill the God’s law, reflect the God’s love, we were created to do good in accordance to that has outlined by God.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.(Ephesians 2:10 NIV)

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2 NIV)

When we should to do good? Paul was advising the Galatians,

So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. (Galatians 6:10 NASB)

My beloved friends, we must realize one thing that our life in this world is very limited. We really don’t know how long we will live in this world. We don’t even know until how old we live. We are grateful if we are given longevity by God, it is God’s great blessing. But still we are not able to determine how long we live. God will determine. We live in this world only stay, as it is written in 1 Peter 1:17,

…conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;

We don’t have to wait the right time and the right place to do good. While there is opportunity to do good, let’s do it. We shouldn’t be like a young woman in the story above who put off the opportunity to do good and finally she got deep regret. We should not miss the opportunity that has been given by God to do good. The opportunity to do good is an opportunity to please and glorify Him, to change our lives and the lives of those who got our help. To do good is a great commission from God.

To whom we should do good? First we have do good start from our household of faith then to all those who in need and deserve.

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in your power to do it. (Proverbs 3:27 NASB)

To do good also not consider the race, religion, social status, gender, and so on. The second foremost commandment said,

‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’(Matthew 22:39 NASB)

What the purpose we do good? We have to realize that do good to others is not for a personal interest such as want to be appreciated, or be respected and without expecting to get anything back. We should to do good with full of merciful.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend them without expecting to get anything back… Be merciful, just as you Father is merciful (Luke 6:35, 36 NIV)

Where we should do good? Anywhere as long we have opportunity to do good, whether in the office, church, in our family, or in neighborhood around us. Anywhere!  Just because everything we do is only for God.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. (Colossians 3:23 NIV)

How we do good? There are so many ways to do good. We could start with these things such as: give big attention, affection, and patience hear someone sharing their problems. Encourage and pray to those who have affliction and suffering. We also could give support in the form of funds to those in need, if we be able.

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40 NIV)

My beloved friends, have we done something good for other in our lives? Have we utilized opportunity that has been given by God to do good? This evening allow me to encourage all of us to make “Do good” as our lifestyle. Don’t be weary in doing good anywhere, anytime, and to anyone who needs our helping hand for the time comes we will reap the harvest of what we have done.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9 NIV)

Don’t eliminate our identity as the followers of Christ. Don’t put off the opportunity to do good because it may not happen again. Let’s use the opportunity that has been given by God to glorify His name, radiate His great love to the world through to do good to others. Amen.

  1. We share the good news and love our neighbor as ourselves and we do good, but even our doing is not of ourselves, but from God. Thank you for doing so much good with your words.

  2. Dear Karina – there is something good about doing good because we believe ourselves to be Christian. I wonder if there is something infinitely more “pure” if we forget that label and simply “love” because “Love Is”. My thinking? We all “love” whether or not we are Christians. I wonder … if we “love because we are Christians” is that not simply saying to ALL His creation – “and that is why WE are better than YOU!” And the rest of His creation look at “loving Christians” and think “love is love – why do you think yourselves better?”

    • Dear brother in Christ, Paul..
Quite long not read your comment 🙂 as always your comment make me ponder deeply. It was a great thought. Yes I am totally agree, with Christians label or not, we are still “love” love is all.. We are humans of love. No matter who we are. I really like your statement “love is love” our lives is love. Thank you very much for your deep and valuable thought. Made me ponder so deep. Have a great day and blessings to you, brother Paul.

  3. Aw, my dear sister…a very good post indeed! How often do we pass up these kinds of opportunities or delay acting on them as the lady did! I’m reminded of the scripture which talks about helping others, and how it is like helping the Lord Himself…

” (The righteous asking Jesus)…’And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? ‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’…” (Matthew 25:38-40).

Here, Jesus seems to be speaking of fellow Christians, but the idea can have a wider application to include all people. When we help someone in need, we are acting on behalf of the Savior…and it’s like helping Him in need!

A very important thought to take with us the next time we feel like “blowing off” the homeless…

    • Hello brother!
Thank you for your Bible verses 🙂 Yes without realized, we often pass up the opportunity to do good and even we ignore the great opportunity that has been given by God to glorify Him through do good. Yes I do agree to do good is not simply to the Christ followers but indeed to others outside of Christian just because that is the time to proclaim God’s word and bring them to know and accept Jesus Christ. We show His great love to others. Thank you and have a blessed day.,brother.

      • There is an old saying…”actions speak louder than words.” And this is very true where Christians are concerned. People watch us to try to find fault. But if we live what we teach, they will see that instead.

Some will never admit they may have been wrong about us, but others may very well ask us why we believe, and that’s the opportunity to share about Jesus…

        Enjoy your evening, sis 😉

  5. A great post indeed. Bravo! I like your opening story. We should never postpone the good we want to do. It may become too late. If we all did good and only good, the world would be an excellent place for everybody. Thanks for inspiring your readers with this lofty post.

  6. It happened to me, even though the man didn’t die like in the opening story. Someone asked me for money when I thought I had none. Only to find out I had more than he asked for after he left! I still cannot forget this experience. So, we must be ready to help every time!

  8. True Love Karina is not forced it comes from the Heart and like God’s Love it wants to Bless and help others. When I first read the Scripture below I was surprised that neither of them knew what they had done and had not done, they both responded as if they were surprised at what Jesus said but their actions or non actions to others showed where their heart focus really was.

Matthew 25:34 -46 Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And The King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall He answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

I still believe Karina we have to choose to walk in The Fruit of the Spirit and that we will be empowered to do so by The Holy Spirit but we will choose this willingly it’s not something we will have to make ourselves do because when Jesus is within us it’s what He wants to do.

          • Hi sis. I know you are right about posting to the blog. It’s just that I see a number of sites which post many good things per day, and I struggle to come up with one thing?

It makes me feel as if my heart isn’t in the right place sometimes. Since I have retired, this is the main thing I do with much of my day…blog about the Lord. I have more time than most and I seem to fall short much of the time. Maybe I am being too hard on myself…I don’t know.

Anyway, Happy 2nd Anniversary to you and your husband! And be grateful for the blessings you have in all things! I know you are, Karin.

Until next time, Lord love and keep you!

  11. Even those who have never read or heard of the Bible, who do not know Christ, can recognize good. Christians are both bread and light to the world, as Christ is the bread of life and light of the world to us (John 6: 35 and John 8: 12). Whether the good we do is recognized or not, we have a part to play in the struggle of good against evil. ❤

  12. It is easy to know when to do good…the answer is always! As long as we call ourselves children of God we need to seek out opportunities to be nice and helpful towards others. Encourage them in all good things as Christ constantly encourages us in Him. Good post, Karin!

    Blessings to you, my sister…
    Steve 🙂
